Adapting Together: Exploring Risk, Change, and Pathways in Fragile Delta Systems

Welcome – Your Insight Matters

This survey invites your reflections on flood risk, adaptation, and governance in fragile or fast-changing delta regions around the world, and how these insights can help improve adaptive planning in the Ayeyarwady Delta of Myanmar, including the megacity of Yangon.

The survey is part of an academic research project at the University of Cologne, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

People engage with deltas in many different ways — through policy, research, engineering, humanitarian response, community practice, project work, or lived experience. You do not need expertise in every area to participate. Each person sees a different part of the system, and these diverse perspectives are essential for understanding real-world complexity.

We welcome everything you bring: what you know, what you have seen succeed or break down, and what you feel should guide the future, including the values and priorities that matter most.

Your input will help:

  1. Strengthen understanding of risk creation, governance challenges, and adaptation options in delta regions globally; and
  2. Support the development of more adaptive, realistic, and fragility-aware pathways for the Ayeyarwady Delta.

Your Participation

The survey takes around 20–30 minutes and is organized into 5 parts:
  • Your Background
  • Drivers of Risk and Vulnerability
  • Adaptation Measures
  • Timing and Pathways
  • Visions and Practice-based Insights
Most questions use simple multiple-choice or rating formats, with a few optional spaces for brief comments. You can skip any question that does not fit your situation or that you prefer not to answer.

Thank you for sharing your insights — they help shape more resilient and inclusive pathways for the future!

This survey is anonymous.

The record of your survey responses does not contain any identifying information about you, unless a specific survey question explicitly asked for it.

If you used an identifying access code to access this survey, please rest assured that this code will not be stored together with your responses. It is managed in a separate database and will only be updated to indicate whether you did (or did not) complete this survey. There is no way of matching identification access codes with survey responses.

General Information About the Research Project

This survey is part of an academic PhD research project at the University of Cologne, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), titeled: "Rising sea and sinking land: Determining spatially resolved subsidence rates for the Ayeyarwady Delta (Myanmar) and developing dynamic adaptation scenarios for the increased risk of flooding". The project investigates driving factors and societal effects of sea-level rise, land subsidence, and flooding in the Ayeyarwady Delta (Myanmar) in order to support the development of dynamic and adaptive disaster governance strategies.

The survey will take approximately 25–35 minutes to complete.

There are no expected risks or disadvantages associated with participation.

Voluntary Participation

Participation in this study is entirely voluntary.

You may:

  • skip any question,

  • stop at any time,

  • withdraw consent without giving any reason.

If you leave the survey before submitting, any answers you have already entered may be saved as a partial (incomplete) response. A partial response is created only if you have already moved to another page of the survey. Your responses are anonymous from the moment they are submitted. Because anonymous data cannot be linked back to you, submitted responses cannot be withdrawn.

Data Protection and Anonymity

The questionnaire collects no personal identifying information by default. We do not store personal information such as your name, email or IP address, location, institutional affiliation or device identifiers. Background questions are optional and can be skipped. The survey collects only research-related information, including perceptions, experiences, and assessments related to environmental risks.

All survey responses are stored and processed in anonymous form from the moment they are submitted.

Optional contact information (stored separately)

At the end, you may optionally provide an email address if you wish to receive study results, or volunteer for an optional follow-up interview. This contact data is stored separately and cannot be linked to your survey answers. It can be deleted at any time upon request.

Purpose and Use of the Data

Your anonymized data will be used exclusively for scientific research (including academic publications, conference presentations, teaching or student theses,  research documentation). All results will be presented in aggregated and fully anonymized form. In line with DFG recommendations on transparency and reproducibility, anonymized datasets may be shared as open data. Your data will not be used for any purposes other than those described here.

Data Storage, Server Location, and Retention

This survey is hosted on a dedicated LimeSurvey server operated on campus by the IT Center (ITCC) of the University of Cologne. It is not connected to limesurvey.org or any external cloud services. Access is limited to the responsible researcher and authorized research team members bound by confidentiality. Data will be retained for up to 10 years, in accordance with DFG research data management guidelines. No data will be transferred to third parties outside the EU.

Legal Basis and Right to Withdraw

The legal basis for data processing is your voluntary consent in accordance with Art. 6(1)(a) EU-GDPR (consent) and Art. 89 EU-GDPR (scientific research). You may withdraw your consent at any time without any disadvantages. Because survey data are anonymous, it is not possible to delete individual responses, as they cannot be connected to your identity. Optional contact data can be deleted at any time.
